Are Wetlands Really the “Earth’s Kidneys”?

February 6, 2018

Most people don’t think about it, but healthy kidneys filter waste and water from their bodies 24 hours a day. That right, they never get a break, not even for coffee. Similarly, most people don’t think about it, but healthy wetlands perform similar functions for mother earth.

When water from rain, snowmelt, or even human-created runoff is permitted to slowly soak into a healthy wetland, that wetland can act like a filter cleansing suspended particles, pollutants, and nutrients before directing the cleansed water to either groundwater or a nearby stream.

So, while a kidney traps waste and flushes it from the human body, a healthy wetland traps waste and releases water cleaner than what flowed into it.
