The Biggest Short – Fresh, Clean Water

March 23, 2016

Michael Burry, the character played by Christian Bale in the Oscar-winning movie “The Big Short,” was among the first to identify the sub-prime housing bubble and to predict the subsequent crash.  Burry’s fund, Scion Capital, recorded returns of 489% between November 2000 and June 2008 by shorting the housing market.

Today, in the face of a financial system he still distrusts, the former medical doctor turned fund manager has put his money into a precious commodity he deems safe for investment – water.

In a recent interview with New York Magazine, Burry explains:  “Fresh, clean water cannot be taken for granted. And it is not — water is political, and litigious. Transporting water is impractical for both political and physical reasons, so buying up water rights did not make a lot of sense to me, unless I was pursuing a greater fool theory of investment — which was not my intention. What became clear to me is that food is the way to invest in water,” he said.
