Chesapeake Shore Mitigation Bank – Another Milestone

October 28, 2026

Chesapeake Shore Mitigation Bank recently announced its initial mitigation credit release, marking an important milestone in the development of one of Virginia’s significant coastal wetland restoration initiatives.

Located near Cape Charles, Virginia the approximately 298-acre Chesapeake Shore Mitigation Bank occupies an ecologically important landscape along Old Plantation Creek, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. The project is designed to restore, enhance, and permanently protect valuable tidal and non-tidal wetlands and associated upland habitats.

Serving portions of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, Middle Peninsula, and Hampton Roads region, Chesapeake Shore offers permit applicants a reliable, environmentally responsible solution for offsetting unavoidable impacts to aquatic resources.

The project incorporates substantial ecological improvements, including restoration of wetland hydrology, enhancement of tidal connectivity, stabilization of wetland shorelines, control of invasive vegetation, and establishment of diverse native plant communities. These improvements will provide lasting benefits to water quality, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, and the ecological health of the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

The initial credit release represents an important step toward making much-needed compensatory mitigation credits available to support responsible economic development throughout the Bank’s approved Geographic Service Area.

Trout Headwaters is grateful to its amazing team for the significant work and fine attention-to-detail, now enabling permitted and unavoidable impacts to tidal and non-tidal wetland resources along the Virginia coast to be appropriately offset. Learn more: www.chesapeakeshoremitigation.com
