Increasing drought has caused freshwater aquifers to be increasingly tapped to make up for surface waters lost from drought-depleted wetlands, lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. Reports show that we are drawing down these mostly nonrenewable supplies at unsustainable rates in the Western United States and in several other dry regions across the globe.
