Alaska’s Gov. Bill Walker announced on June 29, 2016 that he is ending the Susitna Hydroelectric Dam project. Walker said the project was terminated because Alaska’s budget can’t support it.
Opponents of the project including the Susitna River Coalition were ecstatic with the news and Mike Wood, Board President, Susitna River Coalition said “On behalf of our more than 13,000 members throughout Alaska, the Susitna River Coalition applauds Governor Walker for this tough, but responsive and forward-thinking decision to reject the Susitna dam and pave the way for a sustainable future for one of Alaska’s greatest salmon rivers.” The coalition went on to say “in between celebrating, please take a moment … and then get outside and enjoy our free flowing Susitna River!”
