
Scientific American recently took readers to the headwaters of the Salmon River in Alaska’s Brooks Range. What were once some of the cleanest, clearest streams in the world, are today devoid of life, flowing orange with rust, oxidized metals and acid. This is happening to rivers and streams throughout the Brooks Range – some 75 of them, and likely in Russia and Canada, the article reports.
