Follow University of Montana graduate student Dan Bailey as he travels the wilds of Mongolia this summer to survey and tag Taimen, the world’s largest trout. From a remote field camp, Dan will provide a series of blog posts as he assists with the Taimen Conservation Project. Taimen are highly endangered, have been known to grow to 6-ft long and more than 200 lbs. The information gathered will aid in drafting a conservation plan to protect this megafish.
Notes from the Field – June 6, 2011
After several weeks of back-ordered equipment and countless phone calls, the tagging equipment is packed and on its way to Mongolia! Thank you to Trout Headwaters, Inc. for providing the equipment and to the BioRegions staff for helping to get the equipment over in time for the June 15 start of the Taimen (catch & release) fishing season. One of the great things about living and working in Southwest Montana is the strong connection to Mongolia. Numerous companies and non-profits with strong ties to Mongolia operate out of Livingston and Bozeman, Montana. This allows for a great deal of cooperation between groups that gives all of our work in Mongolia a great feeling of working together.
