The average summer surface temperature of the Great Lakes has risen 8 degrees Fahrenheit since 1980. While twenty years ago the mid-summer surface water temperatures in southern Lake Michigan ranged between 61 and 71 degrees, that same area measured temps between 67 and 77 degrees in 2016.
University of Wisconsin Atmospheric sciences professor Paul Roebber observed that this modern lake warming occurred with a rise of only a single degree in the air temperature above the Great Lakes over the last three decades. Roebber, his colleagues, and the Union of Concerned Scientists warn that if measures are not taken to combat climate change, air temperatures over the Great Lakes will soar. This prediction will not sit well with a region where the hometown Green Bay Packers football fans have nicknamed their home stadium the Frozen Tundra.
