Hardening Shorelines Hinders Recovery of the Chesapeake Bay

For decades Chesapeake Bay waterfront property owners have bulkheaded and riprapped their shoreline areas to protect them from erosion. In this effort to stop beachfront from washing away, this ‘hard armor’ along the waterfront edges has simply pushed the erosion problems elsewhere and is hindering efforts to recover the vital estuary.  The Baltimore Sun writes recently that these erosion control methods may be limiting the availability of food and shelter for crabs, fish and terrapins. “It also may be aiding the rapid spread of an invasive marsh grass and helping to sustain the population of stinging nettles, a summertime nuisance for swimmers.”  >Read More
