Mangroves have long been known to stabilize shorelines in tropical areas, but with global temperatures warming, there has been a major shift and they are expanding northward to higher altitudes. A recent study by a team of Villanova University scholars suggests that this is a rare piece of good news in our warming climate because in addition to offering storm surge protection for shorelines, mangroves have an enormous capacity for absorbing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses by trapping them in flooded soils for thousands of years.
