Massive Algae Bloom Is Taking Over Florida Lake

July 25, 2016

okeechobeealgaebloomNASA An out of control algae bloom that is covering more than 85 sq. km. of Florida’s Lake Okeechobee is now impacting water quality all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

A recent Time.com article says runoff from farms has created the enormous blue-green algae bloom spurring algae growth. Because discharge from the lake travels through the St. Lucie Canal, the problem has now spread throughout the water system.

This is yet another example of agricultural run-off not being filtered properly by naturally functioning riparian buffers or constructed or repaired wetlands. THI knows how to prevent environmental disasters like this so we incorporate science-based sustainable, natural solutions and processes into all our agricultural related aquatic projects.

Learn how THI can restore your farm to naturally filter runoff to keep your streams, ponds, and aquatic habitats clean, healthy, and inviting. Call the Trout Headwaters team today at 800-218-8107 or complete the simple form below.
