Whitewood Farm Mitigation Bank Approved

November 17, 2022

Whitewood Farm Mitigation Bank in northern Virginia has been formally authorized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to provide mitigation credits to projects with unavoidable impacts in Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, and Fairfax Counties.

This important project received final signatures recently following years of work, design, and planning by the sponsors and agencies. The watershed-scale ecological restoration project on streams, wetlands and riparian areas – across nearly 400 acres – will be maintained and preserved in perpetuity by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation.

Whitewood Farm Mitigation Bank creates and provides mitigation credits as the most convenient, cost-efficient, and ecologically beneficial means to satisfy sections 401 and 404 of the Clean Water Act and Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act.

“I could not be more grateful to see the commitment to conservation and long-term stewardship by the family and the sponsors at the Whitewood Farm Mitigation Bank,” said Michael Sprague of Trout Headwaters whose firm is executing the project. “Working with nature to restore these high-value resources at a watershed scale is incredibly meaningful, especially today as our environment faces such unprecedented challenges.”
